VIU SCIENCE & TECH COMMUNITY LECTURE
Smoke and Dust:
an Overview of Tomorrow’s Urban Air Quality Challenges
Dr. Sarah A. Styler

ABSTRACT: Over the past century, the sources of urban air pollution have varied both in space
and time, from coal‐blackened and foggy 1950s London to sunny and traffic exhaust‐choked
1970s Los Angeles. Now, they are undergoing another dramatic change: as a result of emission
regulations, most vehicular particulate emissions currently arise from non‐exhaust sources like
brake dust and road wear; in addition, as a result of climate change, urban air quality is
increasingly influenced by wildfire particulate emissions. In this talk, I will first provide an
overview of what we know about dust and smoke in the atmosphere; then, I will explain how
atmospheric chemists study dust and smoke, both in the laboratory and in the real world; finally,
I will highlight my group’s efforts to better understand the air quality, health, and climate
impacts of dust and smoke emissions.
