Dr. Virginia Drywater-Whitekiller
Virginia is a member of the Cherokee nation. She is a Fulbright Canada Jarislowsky Foundation Visiting research chair in Aboriginal Studies at VIU for 2018. She is a social worker and the first university graduate in her immediate family, gaining her Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the Oklahoma State University. Virginia is a professor at the Northeastern State University (NSU) of Oklahoma and has over 20 years’ experience teaching social work and indigenous studies courses. Her current research is focussed on identifying relevant supports for Indigenous students in accessing and succeeding in tertiary education. She also has in the Cherokee community examined experiences regarding Family Group Conferencing and made policy recommendations in this regard. In her work, she carries the legacy of Chief Wilma Mankiller, the first elected female chief of the Cherokee Nation. Her commitment to social work practice with Aboriginal populations is an expression of her and her husband’s way of life.

Nancy MacDonald
Nancy is an award winning feature writer with the Globe and Mail, whose work focuses on race and social justice issues. She spent the previous 12 years with Maclean's. Nancy grew up in a small francophone, Metis community in southern Manitoba. She is currently researching meaningful responses to Indigenous child protection issues.
