It might start out as a niggling feeling that something isn’t quite right in your course. But when that niggling feeling doesn’t go away, and you investigate a little deeper, you may discover a disconnect between how you’ve been marking and what you actually want your students to experience and achieve. In this session, four VIU instructors discuss how their own niggling feelings led them to alter their teaching and their grading methods.

Marilyn Funk knew that she wanted to provide more meaningful and timely feedback to her students, so she redesigned one of her courses to include a robust peer-feedback cycle that supported authentic, meaningful and in-time feedback. Alan Gilchrist and Jerome Lesemann both knew their students were overwhelmed with assignments that didn’t necessarily reflect the deeper, more critical thinking skills they were both hoping students would develop. Both Jerome and Alan reimagined their courses replacing tests and quizzes with more authentic and engaging projects. Carmen Lavoie wanted her students to go deeper and more meaningfully with their reflections, and looked toward developing lower risk reflective assignments that involved a self-assessment component. Each panelist will discuss in greater depth where their niggling feeling came from, what they did to address it, and what they noticed when they shifted.

This is a panel session with informal, story-sharing from each faculty member and time for Q and A and discussion. Refreshments served.
