The White Room
4 Church St, upstairs
Join us for the Portfolio Reading Series’ inaugural evening, launching its monthly literary gathering at Nanaimo’s hip White Room, upstairs at 4 Church St downtown, and featuring Salt Spring’s own Kathy Page, newly-minted winner of the Writer’s Trust prize for fiction for her novel Dear Evelyn.
Set between the wars on a working-class London street, Harry Miles pursues poetry only to meet Evelyn Hill on the steps of Battersea Library. The two fall in love as the world prepares for battle, caring for each other over the decades that follow to shape and reshape their lifetimes. Harry fights in North Africa and Evelyn struggles with a young child at home and the two grow both together and apart as their marriage winds intimately around each other and toward a surprising conclusion.
"a vivid... watchful, empathetic chronicle forgiving to the end” —Kirkus (starred review)
“Page’s prose is vivid and alive, with nary a scrap of throwaway writing to be found.” —Publishers Weekly
“One of our most daring writers … If you don’t know Page’s work yet, she’s a find.” —Caroline Adderson
“Kathy Page is a massive talent.” —Barbara Gowdy
“Emotionally resonant, poignant examinations of life and love and – most piercingly – death… Page is a highly skilled miniaturist, capable of pulling off powerful effects by way of simple (though never simplistic) prose and a keen eye for human fallibility and ambiguity.” —Quill & Quire
The series will open with 3 very promising story writers - Alasdair Robertson, Caileigh Broatch and Zoe McKenna - and showcase fiction in Portal 2018 and work-in-progess from these emerging talents. Portal is VIU’s annual full-colour literary magazine sold nationally on newsstands and celebrating 27 years featuring the fiction, non-fiction, scripts, poetry, interviews, book reviews, illustration, and photography, from the university’s aspiring artists.
