In this panel session, three VIU instructors share stories about their experiences working with international students, highlighting the strategies they find most effective in setting students up for success.

Every year, Jean-Guy Robichaud’s student cohorts are comprised of up to 80% international students. Jean-Guy will discuss how he engages his diverse student demographic, outlining strategies and activities that support students working in groups, communicating effectively, participating respectfully in class discussions and adhering to academic integrity standards. Dawn Johnson is currently engaged in doctoral studies around creating successful experiences for international students. Dawn will model a mini-lesson on affective filters, unpacking various ways instructors can lower anxiety and stress for students in the classroom. Sylvia Arnold is the coordinator of VIU’s International Academic Support (IAS). Sylvia will discuss some of her experiences working at IAS, focusing on how IAS supports students holistically and providing insight and observations on what international students are struggling with at VIU.

Each participant will share, and there will be time for Q and A and discussion. Lunch will be provided.
