Conversari or ‘keep company with’ is the Latin root of the word ‘conversation’. VIU Visual Art alumni Denise Tierney, Nan Goodship and Gem Chang-Kue have created works inspired by a year of coming together for stimulating exchanges about life, the process of making art and the things they care about most. This exhibition is the result of their appreciation of conversation within themselves, with each other and with the world at large. Each artist has a unique creative process and aesthetic. Denise Tierney paints the human condition, looking to capture the often-curious ways we relate to each other and our surroundings. Nan Goodship works in large-format watercolour to explore contemplative conversation with the natural world. Gem Chang-Kue combines ceramic sculpture and digital video projection to create dream-like multi-media installations. They have embraced divergent artistic practices with curiosity, returning again and again to the energy of conversation and the power of truly listening.
Conversari art exhibition runs January 11 – February 22, 2019 at the View Gallery, Vancouver Island University, 900 Fifth St, Nanaimo.
Opening reception and artist talk will be held January 11 from 6 – 9 pm
