Elle Marja, a retired teacher of Sami heritage, returns for her sister’s funeral to her people’s homestead in Northern Sweden. Kernell’s film takes us back to the 1930s when, like Canada’s indigenous peoples, Sami children were forced into government-run rural boarding schools where the children suffered humiliating experiences of racial examinations and treatment as mental inferiors. For Elle Maja, in order to resist prejudice and realize her potential, she leaves her home and family behind. Kernell’s beautiful, elegantly filmed work tells of what must be sacrificed in order to negotiate the lines between heritage and belonging, needs and dreams.

Guest speaker: Dr. Colleen McVeigh, VIU Department of Anthropology
